12 STRATEGIC PRIORITIES PRIORITY 3 / SAFE, FAIR & INCLUSIVE CHILD SAFE STANDARDS From 1 January 2017 the State Government introduced seven compulsory Child Safe Standards (the Standards) for sporting organisations to provide services that protect children and prevent abuse. Backed by the State Government, Vicsport has developed a program designed to train SSA and RSA staff to implement the Standards in their respective organisations. The program is conducted via small workshops, PowerPoint presentations and direct one-on-one support. Vicsport also received a grant through the Commission for Children and Young People to deliver additional support for sporting organisations throughout the transitional process and delivered four train- the-trainer type workshops to assist and educate SSA and RSA staff on the standards. On 29 September 2016, Vicsport hosted an Industry Forum that provided an overview of the Standards and offered direct support to sporting organisations about legislation. Case studies, information templates and resources about the Standards can be found on the Vicsport website – https://vicsport.com.au/child-safe-standards VICTORIAN SPORT COMMUNITY IFTAR DINNER On 4 July 2016 Vicsport co-hosted the first Victorian Sports Community Iftar Dinner in conjunction with the Australian Intercultural Society to create a greater awareness and connection with the Muslim community. The event was a fantastic opportunity for sport administrators to engage directly with the Muslim community using the common enthusiasm for sport as a springboard for conversations leading to better understandings by all involved. PRIDE IN VICTORIAN SPORT On 14 July 2016 Vicsport partnered with Rowena Allen, Gender and Sexuality Commissioner to host Pride in Victorian Sport, highlighting the role sport can play in changing cultures and equality. This event included an address by the Victorian Minister for Equality Martin Foley MP, a screening of the documentary ‘Scrum’ and a panel discussion focusing on strengthening the relationship between the LGBTIQ and Victorian sports communities.
